MARAUDING teenagers who allegedly bashed tourists during the Australian Open tennis were also involved in a vicious assault a month earlier which left a man unconscious in the middle of Flinders St, a court has heard.

One of the alleged attackers involved in the bashing of a lauded American surgeon and his son and, 20 minutes later, a group of German tourists, appeared at a children’s court today to apply for bail.

The 17-year-old’s lawyer said he wanted to be released and had undergone counselling for anger management.

But a police officer told the court the boy had been interviewed, although not charged, over a sustained daylight assault in Flinders St in December that left the victim unconscious.

“The victim was unable to protect himself,” the officer told the court.

A one point the victim was kicked in the head while he lay prostrate on tram tracks in the middle of the street.

A month later on January 17, some of the same youths allegedly bashed highly acclaimed US doctor Edmund Pribitkin, 52, and his son Edik, 17, in Queen Victoria Gardens as they walked home from the tennis on January 17.

Dr Pribitkin was put in an induced coma with serious head injuries and Edik was concussed and left with a broken nose.

The court today heard that Dr Pribitkin was yet to recover, could barely open his mouth and required extensive further surgery.

Later that night, the same group allegedly set upon a group of young German tourists who had also been enjoying the tennis, about 50m from the first assault.

The teen’s bail application was adjourned this morning, part heard.
