A group of thugs ambushed a man and whacked him over the head with a baton to steal his headphones in a brutal daytime attack in the CBD.
The victim was put in a headlock by one of the attackers who approached him from behind near the corner of Swanston and Little Lonsdale Sts about 3pm on Monday, December 9.
While in his clutches the rest of the group gathered round and demanded he hand over the headphones.
The 23-year-old victim managed to break free and started to run away but his headphones fell to the ground.

When he bent down to collect them, he was struck on the back of the head with the baton.
He escaped with minor injuries, while the group then fled towards La Trobe St.
Police released images of the alleged offenders in a bid to track them down.
