Forensic testing has confirmed that remains found in a bag in Melbourne’s western suburbs are human.
The remains were found beneath a railway bridge in Altona North on Monday afternoon.
The homicide squad is investigating.
“The remains are currently undergoing DNA testing to an attempt to determine who they belong to,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

The DNA will then be checked against a list of missing persons.
Railway workers made the grisly discovery about midday.
Police and homicide detectives combed the scene but there is no indication of how long the remains had been there or whether the discovery was linked to a violent crime.
Amy McLelland, 22, who lives on McIntyre Drive, near where the remains were found, said she couldn’t believe the reports when she heard them.
“(When I was a kid) I used to play near the drains where the remains were found,” she said.
“I am quite in shock to be honest, it’s pretty unbelievable.”
And in an incident only metres from the discovery of the remains, MFB crews were called to a grassfire that afternoon, but it was unclear whether the two incidents were linked.
An MFB spokesman said two trucks had been called to the fire, which was put out within 10 minutes, but the fire was not being treated as suspicious.
