AN elderly woman was walking her dogs when a “significant altercation” left her lying in a pool of blood in a St Albans driveway last night.

It’s understood the woman was walking her two dogs Lucky and Shelly along Willaton St when the incident occurred.

A woman aged in her 30s was this morning arrested close to where the 77-year-old Vietnamese woman was found with life threatening injuries.

A friend, who wished to remain anonymous, said he rushed out of his home and found the woman “covered in blood”.

“I didn’t recognise her because her face was all busted up but I recognised the dogs,” he said.

“Then I realised after 15-20 seconds who she was. There was blood all over her,

“She couldn’t say anything. There was blood coming out of her nostrils.”

The victim’s friend said he tried to ask her questions but she was unresponsive.

“I asked her some questions in Vietnamese like are you ok, who did this, what happened, but she didn’t say anything back to me.”

The woman was taken to The Royal Melbourne hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

Homicide detectives continue to door knock houses along Willaton and Bent St as they piece together the incident.

Homicide squad detective inspector Tim Day said the victim received “significant” injuries and has urged anyone with information to come forward.

“The injuries and the circumstances on how it occurred are yet to determine,” he said.

“It’s clear a significant altercation has occurred.”

Mr Day confirmed a St Albans woman, aged in her 30s, was arrested at a property on Bent St, just metres from the crime scene, and taken into custody.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident but encourage anyone who witnessed or heard the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Police are also looking for the man who initially found the victim.

He left the scene before speaking to police.

The man is described as being of Middle Eastern appearance, aged in his late 40s to early 50s with a medium build, 170-175cm tall with dark short hair and spoke limited English.

Detectives are also keen to speak to anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage that possibly captured the assault or the events leading up to it.
