A SACKED stablehand who claimed to be still owed money from Efficient’s 2007 Melbourne Cup win has been jailed for eight years for a vengeful kidnap rampage.

Mark Dosen, 40, was foreman at businessman and six-time Cup winner Lloyd Williams’ Macedon Lodge stables from 2004 until he was sacked in December 2009.

Almost seven years later, Dosen, wearing a wig and affected by drugs, burst into the home of former friend Luke Campbell, who helped get him the job at Macedon Lodge and who ultimately sacked him.

The County Court heard he used a belt to whip Mr Campbell, punched him in front of his fiancee and daughter, 5, and threatened to kill him unless he handed over $20,000.

Claiming he had helped train Efficient, and was still owed a share of the winnings, he abducted Mr Campbell, forcing him to drive to a bank.

As they drove by Macedon Lodge, Dosen ranted about his mistreatment.

Mr Campbell managed to escape by stopping the car and running towards an approaching police car. Dosen fled.

He later used Mr Campbell’s credit cards to buy $2000 of goods, and used Mr Campbell’s driver’s licence, doctored to include his own photo, to withdraw $6000.

After failing to deposit $20,000 from Mr Campbell’s cheque book into his own account, he was arrested when he went back to the bank to try to withdraw another $20,000.

From jail, he then wrote Mr Campbell a threatening letter saying the mafia was unhappy with him and he should change his statement, pay up, and his family wouldn’t be hurt.

Dosen pleaded guilty to 15 charges over the June 2016 crime spree, including blackmail, kidnapping, aggravated burglary and obtaining a financial advantage by deception.

Judge Paul Grant said Dosen had terrorised Mr Campbell and his family.

“You kidnapped him. You stole his car, and you stole his money. Then, some weeks later, you wrote him a blackmail letter,” the judge said.

Judge Grant said Dosen had only just completed his parole on a 4½-year jail sentence for arson, aggravated burglary with a firearm, criminal damage, theft and resisting police.

His criminal record also included a 28-day jail term and a six-month Community Correction Order for intentionally causing injury, burglary, theft and deception in December 2000, and, three months later, a 21-month jail term for recklessly causing serious injury, making a threat to kill, and criminal damage.
