The sister of gangland widow Roberta Williams has slammed the media for labelling her family ‘mobsters’, as she left a court hearing where she’s accused of stealing suitcases from Melbourne Airport.
Michelle Kaye Mercieca, 51, fronted the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court today for a brief hearing where she revealed she would contest the 19 theft charges.
“Why are they calling us mobsters?,” she said, adding that dredging up the past just brings hurt to all the families involved.
She also criticised having her name linked to her sister, saying: “This has got nothing to do with Roberta.”

Outside court, Ms Mercieca would not go into details about the allegations levelled against her, saying she would share her story once the court case was over.
“I’ve been unfairly treated by the police,” she said. “I will let you know at the end.”
Police allege Ms Mercieca, from Kings Park, nicked luggage from baggage carousels at the airport on seven separate occasions between October 6, 2017 and September 5, 2018.
At least $45,000 worth of goods from 18 suitcases was allegedly stolen.
Hume Crime Investigation Unit detectives charged her following a dawn raid on her home, where seven suitcases were allegedly uncovered, on September 20.
Today’s hearing lasted only minutes with her lawyer asking for an adjournment to next month for a contest mention.
Ms Mercieca’s bail was extended, which excludes her from attending the airport or any other international departure points.
She will return to court on March 19.
