UPDATE: A MAN has been arrested after a woman was found dead in a Richmond house. Shocked neighbours say she was a “reclusive” person who “always had the window shutters and blinds closed”.
Police responded to reports a woman’s body had been found in a Westbank Tce house about 4pm.
Sergeant Kim Bramwell said the circumstances of how she died had not been determined but investigators were treating it as suspicious.
Police confirmed a 49-year-old woman died after suffering “significant injuries”.
A 75-year-old Richmond man was arrested by detectives this morning and is currently assisting police with their inquires.
The Herald Sun understands the alarm was raised after the victim’s boyfriend visited the property.
Sensing something was wrong, the boyfriend then asked for help from a neighbour.
The pair entered the kitchen of the Richmond property and discovered the woman’s body on the floor in a pool of blood. Police and ambulance services were then called.
It is believed the woman had received serious knife wounds to her neck.
A man, believed to have known the victim, required medical assistance after arriving at the scene.
Parking in the middle of the road, the man spoke to police and broke down after learning what had happened.
A friend of the victim also arrived to do a welfare check when the woman did not show up at work.
Neighbours described the Richmond woman as reclusive.
“Always had the window shutters and blinds closed,” a neighbour said.
Homicide squad detectives were last night taking statements from locals and those known to the victim.
Two houses were cordoned off as investigators searched for clues into what appeared to be a fatal stabbing. Residents were shocked to hear of the discovery after returning home throughout the night.
“I can’t believe this has happened,” one neighbour said.
“It’s normally so quiet around here.”
Another local said: “I didn’t know her, but it’s truly tragic.”
The busy street, regularly used as a short cut between Swan St and Bridge Rd was closed overnight.
