Richard Vincec charged with manslaughter of Jaiden Walker in Melbourne Magistrates Court

A MAN charged with killing an acquaintance said he lashed out after his victim refused to shake his hand, a court has heard.

A MAN charged with killing an acquaintance said he lashed out after his victim refused to shake his hand, a court has heard.

There is little more to the police case against Richard Vincec who was on Tuesday charged with manslaughter following the death of 22-year-old Jaiden Walker.

Mr Walker had been fighting for life since he was allegedly punched just once by Mr Vincec following a night of partying in the CBD on May 6.

Mr Vincec had been facing a lesser assault charge but that was upgraded on Tuesday after Mr Walker last week lost his fight for life.

Mr Vincec, 26, had left his long-term partner and their three young children at home to party with friends at the Cherry Bar on ACDC lane.

There, police say he offered one friend drugs and “hooked up” with another woman.

The couple were kicked out of the bar and he begged her to go to a motel room with him.

She refused and Mr Vincec started farewelling his friends by shaking their hands.

It’s alleged Mr Walker refused to shake his hand prompting Mr Vincec to warn: “Shake me hand Jaiden, shake me hand c***”.

Senior Constable Gunwinder Gill told the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday Mr Vincec then lashed out, punching Mr Walker.

The 22-year-old fell to the ground with his head making a “deafening cracking sound” when it struck the pavement.

The court heard Mr Vincec fled the scene, leaving his victim for dead.

The court heard he later sent a message to the woman he had become intimate with telling her: “Sorry about your friend. All I wanted was a handshake”.

Mr Vincec was remanded in custody on Tuesday and appeared in court where he made an application for bail.

He sobbed throughout the hearing during and mouthed the word “sorry” to supporters, including his girlfriend, in court.

Despite a prima facie entitlement to bail, magistrate John Bentley remanded Mr Vincec in custody until his suitability for release could be assessed next week.

He said he had grave concerns about allegations of drug use and the seriousness of the charges.

“This sort of behaviour is quite extraordinary,” he said.

Mr Vincec is charged with manslaughter, intentionally cause serious injury, and drug possession charges.

Detectives are still keen to speak to anyone that may have witnessed the assault.

Investigators would also like to speak to anyone that was at the Cherry Bar on ACDC Lane prior to the assault between 10.15pm and 11.45pm.
