Raymond ‘Mr Stinky’ Edmunds jailed for brutal unsolved rapes

Notorious killer rapist “Mr Stinky” who crept into homes across Melbourne’s east and attacked women in their homes, in some instances when a child was also in the bed, will now die behind bars for his terrifying crimes.

Raymond Edmunds was given the moniker Mr Stinky because of the offensive body odour reported by his victims.

Notorious killer rapist Raymond “Mr Stinky” Edmunds sat calmly as he was today jailed for 23 years and five months for a series of terrifying cold case rapes and assaults.

The hefty sentence brings some closure to the sex monster’s victims decades on.

But for him, it makes little difference to his life other than he has somewhat cleared his conscience.

He knows he will die in prison.

The 75-year-old, known as Mr Stinky for his bad body odour, is already serving two life sentences without parole for the 1966 murders of Abina Madill, 16, and Garry Heywood, 18, in Shepparton.

He last year contacted detectives from his prison cell to confess to further unsolved crimes.

“This is part of cleaning up what he has in the background,” his barrister Peter Chadwick QC told the court.

“It was for a sense of bringing peace, peace of mind to both himself and the victims.”

Shocking details were aired in court about his stealth attacks on eight women and a 14-year-old girl in their homes between 1971 and 1984.

Edmunds terrorised women — many of them young mothers with children sleeping nearby, some who were pregnant — across the Melbourne suburbs of Wheelers Hill, Edithvale, Greensborough, Donvale and Clayton.

“I just want to make love to you. I’ve been watching you for two weeks,” he told one victim, before forcing himself on her in her bedroom.

“I’ve got a knife,” he told another victim, telling her to “think about your children”.

His vile crime spree occurred while he was on the run over the 1966 murders, which he was not arrested for until 1985.

He was also living a double life, working as a security guard, married and with children.

The sex fiend pleaded guilty to 10 offences, including four counts of rape, false imprisonment and two counts each of indecent assault and assault causing bodily harm.

County Court judge Susan Pullen accepted Edmunds’ guilty pleas would bring “some closure” to his victims all these years on.

But she had no doubt his crimes would have been “traumatic and terrifying” for them at the time.

“The facts in this case are most serious and disturbing,” she said.

She convicted him and set the 23-year and five-month jail term, saying “the very magnitude of the offending before me requires a sentence of some substance”.

She acknowledged that no matter what sentence she imposed, he would die in prison.

His latest convictions add to his extensive rap sheet.

He became known as “The Donvale Rapist” in 1986 when he was ordered to spend 30 years behind bars after pleading guilty to three counts of rape and two of attempted rape committed between July 1971 and February 1977.

He also made a brazen bid to escape from Melbourne’s Pentridge Prison in 1992.
