Questions asked after shooting at Stephen Dank’s Melbourne home

AS one of Australia’s foremost specialists in peptides, Stephen Dank moves in a world inhabited by some colourful characters, writes Carly Crawford

WHO shot the sports scientist? And more intriguingly, why?

As one of Australia’s foremost specialists in peptides, Stephen Dank moves in a world inhabited by some colourful characters.

From bent cops and bikies, to athletes and white-collar professionals, the peptide scene will surely figure in the investigation.

Detectives will come across a motley cast as they dig into this one.

Dank has a long list of friends and associates, but according to one former associate, his list of enemies is probably longer.

So where to start?

He is known to have owed serious money to some heavy characters over the years. But he isn’t thought to have had any recent threats.

Dank’s supporters have floated a range of theories, suggesting bikies were stroppy that Dank’s peptide business was undermining their trade in steroids.

The next theory, as told by former Adelaide Crows coach Graham Cornes, is that Dank believes the shooting was an attempt to silence him ahead of a speaking engagement at a country footy club.

Just what he was planning to say remains unknown.

But we do know Dank — under significant pressure from the AFL and ASADA — refused to spill the beans for years.

He’s been banned for life from the AFL and the NRL for giving banned drugs to athletes. He then refused to explain it.

Now he thinks he’s being shot at because he’s talking?

Whatever the outcome, the drama is a reminder of how badly the AFL and Essendon dropped the ball by letting Dank into the world of professional sport.
