Brandon Leigh Osborn was given a nine-year term with a minimum of six after pleading guilty to shooting Ms Belej, 31, at point-blank range.
Her family later expressed disappointment at the sentencing of Osborn but supported the appeal move today.
“I thank everyone in the community for their support. We welcome the decision of the DPP to appeal,” her brother Chris said. “This is more than just about Karen.”
Mildura MP Peter Crisp also supported the decision.
Mr Crisp recently tabled in State Parliament a 9000-signature petition requesting an appeal against the “lenient” sentence imposed on the 37-year-old.
“It’s one that the community asked me to pursue. They wanted the matter brought to attention,” he said.
Osborn shot Ms Belej with an unregistered .357 magnum.
He later said he did not believe the gun would fire and had not intended to kill.
