PROSECUTORS are challenging a Court of Appeal decision to dramatically slash the sentence of a man who doused his girlfriend in petrol and set her on fire.

Yavas Kilic pleaded guilty in March 2015 to the sickening act that inflicted life-threatening injuries on his partner, leading her to terminate a 12-week pregnancy.

He also pleaded guilty to charges of using a prohibited weapon and dealing with suspected proceeds of crime.

Kilic was sentenced to a total of 15 years behind bars, with a 11-year non-parole period.

But on appeal, the Court of Appeal reduced the maximum term of the sentence to 10 years and 10 months, despite acknowledging the “horrific” nature of the crime.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, John Champion SC, last week filed an application with the High Court for special leave to appeal the Court of Appeal decision.
