NEW images have emerged of a couple who was shot by police while dressed up as two comic book characters at a weekend party in a King St nightclub.
POLICE SHOOT TWO PEOPLE AT MELBOURNE NIGHTCLUB
Dale Ewins, 35, and Zita Sukys, 37, were shot by police during a Saints and Sinners get-together at Inflation Nightclub shortly after 3am on Saturday.
A photograph of the couple dressed as comic book characters the Joker and Harley Quinn shows Mr Ewins holding what appears to be a toy gun and pointing it into Ms Sukys’ mouth.
Police say they shot Mr Ewins when they stormed the nightclub after receiving reports of an armed man at the venue.
Several witnesses have disputed the police version of events and said Mr Ewins was not holding the replica gun at the time he was shot.
The Herald Sun has been told Mr Ewins, a bartender, was in a compromising position with Ms Sukys, a local government facility co-ordinator, when police rushed in and shot them.
He was shot in the chest and she in the leg.
Both were in a stable condition; Mr Ewins in Royal Melbourne Hospital and Ms Sukys in The Alfred.
Northwest Metropolitan Region Superintendent Lisa Hardeman said the man had taken a gun from his pants and aimed it at police officers before he was shot.
But Inflation owner Martha Tsamis disputed that, saying Mr Ewins had a toy gun as part of his costume but was not holding it when he was shot.
Wayne Gatt, the secretary of the Police Association, has backed the officers involved.
He said: “The public expects a prompt and appropriate response by police to calls such as this, particularly in our heightened security environment, and police are trained to take and act on threats at their highest potential.
“In this case, someone felt threatened to the point where they called police seeking assistance, and our highly trained members responded to that situation according to their training.”
The Armed Crime Squad and Professional Standards Command is overseeing the probe. Victoria Police did not comment, beyond saying that no charges had been laid.
Detectives are keen to speak with witnesses.
