THE net is closing on the killer of Karen Ristevski as detectives were seen today recreating what they believe was her final journey at the site her body was dumped.
Investigators staged a recreation of the route they think the 47-year-old mother’s murderer took from Avondale Heights to Mt Macedon.
The Herald Sun witnessed detectives meticulously repeat the journey early this afternoon in a distinctive black Mercedes-Benz SLK 200 coupe identical to the car which belonged to Ms Ristevski.
The journey has been recreated before by police but today was the first time the Mercedes has been spotted at the location where Ms Ristevski’s body was found in bushland off Loch Rd in Mt Macedon.
Just after 1.30pm, a convoy of three unmarked police cars arrived with the Mercedes around 100 metres away from where the body was found.
It is the same luxury coupe police have used in other testing around the Ristevski residence.
The team of investigators stayed at the scene for just over 20 minutes before the Mercedes left at 1.58pm, followed by the police cars.
The convoy made the short journey along Mt Macedon Rd before joining the Calder Freeway and heading south towards Melbourne.
Shortly before 2.45pm the Mercedes pulled into Peerless Court, a close distance away from the Ristevski family home in Oakley Drive, Avondale Heights.
The car was then swiftly loaded onto the back of a tow truck and taken away.
Investigators are placing huge significance on the Mercedes as they look to catch Ms Ristevski’s killer.
In June the Herald Sun revealed that a black Mercedes-Benz SLK coupe was captured on CCTV being driven through Diggers Rest, towards Mt Macedon, on June 29 last year — the same day Ms Ristevski vanished.
A black Mercedes was also seen by a witness in the vicinity of Childers Rd and Mt Macedon Rd in late June last year, close to where the body was found.
The Herald Sun understands that one theory police are working on is that the Mercedes was being driven by Ms Ristevski’s husband, Borce, and that her body was in the vehicle when CCTV recorded it in Diggers Rest.
Mr Ristevski, who has denied having anything to do with his wife’s death, did not comment today as he arrived at his Avondale Heights home about 3.15pm.
The widower has told police that he drove his wife’s Mercedes on the day she went missing, but said he went only as far as the Calder Park Raceway before doing a U-turn and driving back to their Avondale Heights home.
Ms Ristevski’s body was found on February 20 this year.
The chief of Victoria Police’s missing persons squad, Detective Inspector Tim Day, confirmed in June that Mr Ristevski is a suspect in the investigation into the murder of his wife.
Natalie Webster, a Victoria Police spokeswoman, said: “Missing persons squad detectives continue to investigate the death of Avondale Heights woman Karen Ristevski.
“As part of their investigation, detectives were in Macedon (today) making inquiries.
“This investigation remains ongoing and at this stage it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
