Tactical police with their guns drawn swarmed a rural Lara compound in a major operation on Thursday.

An officer was taken to hospital after a man, attempting to leave the Breguet Rd property, allegedly rammed an unmarked police car.

A firearm was uncovered in the alleged offender’s vehicle.

Heavily-armed officers in black body armour surrounded the sprawling site, which houses machinery, multiple buildings and a large house.

The police officer, who suffered a serious injury to his hand, remained in hospital as of Thursday night, after specialist police spent hours at the premises.

“Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrived at the rural Breguet Rd address and were met by a man trying to leave about noon,” Victoria Police spokesman Leading-Senior Constable Rohan Imms said.

“The man rammed an unmarked police vehicle and then fled on foot.

“He was arrested a short time later.”

Geelong detectives and Special Operations Group officers then closed in.

It is understood a convoy of more than 10 unmarked tactical police vehicles arrived at the site to investigate.

About 7pm Thursday a tow truck took items, including a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, from the scene, but police remained at the premises.

“Geelong Crime Investigation unit detectives with the assistance of specialist police have executed a warrant at the premises,” Sen-Constable Imms said.

“The investigation is ongoing and is an isolated incident. There is no risk to the broader community.”

Police have not specified what caused them to attend the property.

A 39-year-old Lara man remained in hospital with minor injuries last night, and Sen-Constable Imms said he would be interviewed at a later time.
