DETECTIVES investigating the murder of a 29-year-old accountant in Melbourne’s southeast believe he may have been killed in a case of mistaken identity.

Bo Wang was found dead near the stairway to his Notting Hill apartment complex on Friday, April 14.

Investigators told the Herald Sun there was nothing in Mr Wang’s past to indicate he would be a murder target.

His body was found by a passer-by at 9.30am with multiple injuries from what police believe was one or more edged weapons.

“He worked in accountancy and led a quiet and peaceful existence,” detective Senior Constable Luke Farrell said.

Police have released CCTV and dashcam footage of three men seen in the area around the time of Mr Wang’s death.

Detectives said they had no information to suggest the men were involved but have urged them to come forward.

A light blue Toyota Tarago was also captured on camera in the vicinity just over three hours before Mr Wang’s body was found in Rusden Place.

That vehicle was seen driving away from the scene and south along Blackburn Rd.

“We are satisfied it was not targeted,” Sen-Constable Farrell told the Herald Sun.

“It could have been mistaken identity or a random attack. There is nothing in Mr Wang’s background that would make us think he would be a target for murder.

“He was a quiet and gentle person and we can’t detect any issues. He had no criminal background.”

One of the men police would like to speak to is a young man of Asian appearance seen walking west along Rusden Place toward Blackburn Rd around 5am.

Two men, perceived to be Indian or subcontinental, were also seen walking along Rusden Place and Eucalyptus Mews between 6.20am and 6.35am, and police have also urged them to come forward.

Mr Wang, a Chinese national, came to Australia as a student and completed an accounting degree before finding work in Melbourne.

He had been out for dinner the night before his body was found.

Police say he arrived home at 11pm and he could have been killed any time between then and when his body was found.

Sen-Constable Farrell said: “He is spoken of very highly by everyone who knew him. His family are devastated.”

Investigators do not believe any of Mr Wang’s belongings were stolen during the murder.

“We have no information to say the people in the CCTV are involved,” Sen-Constable Farrell said.

“We are urging them to come forward as soon as possible.

“There are people out there who know what happened to Bo Wang.”
