A LEARNER driver has been nabbed for talking on a mobile phone while her supervising driver was next to her, as police crack down on poor road behaviour this weekend.

A 17-year-old girl driving on her “L” plates was caught in the act on Gourlay Rd in Taylors Hill about 12.55pm yesterday.

“Officers had to pull up next to the car and sound the siren for about 30 seconds before the driver and her supervising driver realised police were there,” Leading Senior Constable Adam West said.

She was fined $476 and four demerit points, and her supervising driver had “a stern talking to”.

Speedy drivers were also caught using the emergency lane on the Western Ring Road in St Albans as part of an Operation Scoreboard.

Officers detected 160 drivers incorrectly using the emergency lane between 3.30pm and 6pm.

Each driver received a fine for $317 and three demerit points.

Another 18 fines were handed to drivers using mobile phones, being unlicensed and drink driving.

In Gladstone Park, police detected a motorcycle travelling at 189km/h along the Pascoe Vale exit ramp just after midnight.

The bike was intercepted and the rider, a 27-year-old man from Glenroy, was interviewed for speed dangerous and excessive speed.

His bike was impounded and he is facing a date with a Magistrate as well as $896 in towing costs.

These intercepts form part of Operation Scoreboard, a statewide focus on road user behaviour that will target speed, driver distraction, seatbelt noncompliance, fatigue and drink and drug driving in an effort to reduce road trauma.

The operation started yesterday and will finish on Sunday, October 1.
