Notorious killers Gavin Perry and Zdravko ‘Frank’ Babic ganged up against inmate in jailhouse shiv attack
Two of Victoria’s most feared killers, who offended while on parole, ganged up to attack a rival inmate in a vicious jailhouse shivving, stabbing their victim multiple times within a maximum security protection unit.

Two notorious killers have teamed up to carry out a vicious jailhouse assault within a maximum security protection unit.
Gavin Perry, who killed Hastings jeweller Dermot O’Toole during an ice-fuelled armed robbery spree, and double murderer Zdravko “Frank” Babic, used shivs to repeatedly stab a rival inmate at Port Phillip Prison.
The victim spent days in hospital where he was treated for wounds to his upper body.

A prison source said the inmate was chased from a cell by the killers who armed themselves with makeshift knives. A third inmate tackled the victim to the ground, enabling the attack, said the insider.
“He was chased from the top to the bottom tier,” said the source.
“Someone else was on the bottom tier and saw (the inmate) getting away so dive-tackled him to the ground so Frank and Gavin could stab him.”
The attack occurred within the Sirius West protection unit.
Areas of the maximum security prison were put into immediate lockdown as paramedics rushed to treat the inmate. The prisoner was then taken to St Vincent’s Hospital.
G4S, the British-based security company that operates the prison, said the attack was being investigated by police.
“G4S can confirm an assault on a prisoner by two other prisoners at Port Phillip Prison occurred on 25th January 2019,” said a G4S spokesperson.
“One prisoner was transferred to hospital for assessment and admitted for treatment, he returned to custody approximately 48 hours later. The incident was referred to Victoria Police for investigation.”
It is understood the inmate is related to Perry, and the pair has a history of violent clashes.
Perry was sentenced to a minimum 23-year prison term for the murder of Mr O’Toole in 2013.
He was on parole and high on ice when he killed the jeweller during a spree of armed robberies.
Findings from a coronial inquest into Mr O’Toole’s death called for Corrections Victoria and the Adult Parole Board to be given “coercive powers” to obtain offenders’ medical and health records, and to conduct random drug tests on parolees.
Babic was sentenced to 13 years’ jail after murdering his Carlton roommate Dennis Arthur Domm in 1995.
He was released on parole on December 23, 2005 and murdered Raphael Innaimo six months later.
Mr Innaimo had 55 injuries and had been strangled with an electric cord.
Babic is believed to be the first person to be convicted for murder while on parole for another homicide.
