New Zealanders, Indians, British the most likely migrants to offend in Victoria

BIRTHPLACE data has shed light on offender rates as Victoria grapples with carjackings and gang violence, revealing which migrants are the most likely to commit a crime.

Crime shaping up to be a major election issue in Victoria

VICTORIA has experienced a 33 per cent rise in the number of crimes committed by Sudan-born criminals in the past three years, showing offending rates have blown out in comparison to population growth.

The number of incidents involving Australian-born thugs has dropped slightly in the same time frame, but that group still accounted for 70 per cent of offenders.

The next most common offenders on Victoria’s rap sheet last year were New Zealanders, Indians, British, and Vietnamese crooks.

The birthplace data, which has shed light on migrant offender rates while Victoria grapples with carjackings and gang violence, came as the Crime Statistics Agency corrected a statistic from last year.

The agency said today a Commonwealth report, widely quoted after its release in December, had inaccurately said that 1.5 per cent of Victoria’s crime was being committed by Sudan-born Australians.

The correct figure, the CSA said, was 1 per cent.

The higher statistic was published in the government’s December report No one teaches you to become an Australian as part of an inquiry into migration.

CSA data showed there were 807 Sudan-born offenders in 2016, and another 40 between January and September last year. More than half were aged under 25.

Government figures showed that the number of Victorian residents from Sudan or South Sudan increased by 13 per cent to 8415 between 2011 and 2016, making up less than 1 per cent of the total population.

While victims are more often targeted by Australian-born thugs, statistics continue to show a disproportionate number of criminals within the community of Sudanese migrants.

Ahmed Hassan from western suburbs mentoring organisation Youth Activating Youth said discrimination, drug abuse, and lack of education or employment contributed to the rate of crime among young migrants.

“They’re finding themselves with a lot of free time and they’re disengaged,” Mr Hassan said.

“Many of these young people come from broken homes.

“We need federal government intervention to assist in the resettlement of refugees and migrants.”

It comes as African leaders join police in a new taskforce to tackle youth crime.
