Mystery device sparks bomb scare on Racecourse Rd

A major road in North Melbourne has been shut down over a bomb scare, sparking traffic delays after a man was found with a suspicious device this morning.

Police have shut down a busy road in North Melbourne following a bomb scare.

A 25-year-old man was found with an unknown device on Racecourse Rd about 10am.

Businesses in the area have been evacuated and Racecourse Rd has been blocked to traffic and trams between Flemington and Boundary roads.

The man has been arrested and the Bomb Response Unit is on scene conducting safety checks.

”A 25-year-old man has been arrested and bomb response unit officers are conducting a safety check,” the spokeswoman said.

The Department of Transport said diversions are in place with emergency services directing traffic.

“Drivers should avoid the area with traffic building quickly,” a Department of Transport statement said.

“Traffic engineers are monitoring traffic conditions through the area and adjusting lights to help minimise delays.”

Alternatives include Macaulay, Mount Alexander and Epsom roads.
