Motorcyclist dead after hitting pole in Kings Park while fleeing police

A Taylors Lakes man has died while evading police just moments after being pulled over for speeding in Melbourne’s northwest this morning.

A 55-year-old motorcyclist has died after crashing his bike while fleeing police in Melbourne’s northwest.

The male rider from Taylors Lakes was intercepted by police on Kings Rd in Kings Park before 11am today.

As police approached him on foot, he sped off south.

Police say they did not pursue the motorcyclist.

He was found dead a short time later near the intersection of McLeod Road.

Police believe he lost control of his bike and smashed into a pole. His bike was also found at the scene.

MCIU Detective Senior Sergeant Gerard Clancy said it was a routine intercept with tragic consequences.

“Unfortunately what we have here is a motorcyclist that has chosen to ride away at speed and as a result, has lost their life,” he said.

“His family has now lost someone they love and care for due to a bad choice.

“This would have been a routine matter involving speeding.

“The members would have gone about the rest of their daily duties but now they are subject to scrutiny as a result of their routine actions.”

The rider was pulled over by a highway patrol unit staffed by an experienced officer and a rookie.

“The passenger (officer) graduated in the last three months,” he said.

“It’s a traumatic experience to start day on a job as routine and it escalated into someone losing their life.

“It’s tragic for everyone but didn’t have to happen.”

Det Sen Sgt Clancy said it was fortunate no one else was injured as he sped off at high speeds.

He urged motorcyclists to obey the road rules at all times.

“Don’t do anything that leads to loss of life or serious injury,” he warned.

His death takes the annual road toll to 203, which is 56 more than this time last year.
