FOUR inmates, with their wrists bound by cable ties, have been escorted into a secure section of the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre by riot police.

More than 30 riot police officers armed with shields stormed into centre on Thursday evening.

Shortly after 6.30pm, riot police and dogs from the canine unit left the youth justice centre.

Victoria Police said six youths had been arrested and would be interviewed by police in relation to alleged criminal damage.

No one was injured during today’s riot.

Earlier, a number of inmates ran towards a fence holding poles and screamed at media.

Police arrived at the facility at about 2pm after inmates locked themselves in a secure yard.

A source told the Herald Sun the teens had caused damage to one unit and had armed themselves with makeshift weapons.

The latest disturbance occurs just days after a riot at the Parkville Youth Justice Centre on the weekend.

It is believed some boys in the rioting unit had been involved in previous incidents at the Parkville Facility in November last year.

A Victoria police spokeswoman said inmates had locked themselves into a secure yard and had refused to come out.

A Department of Health and Human Services spokeswoman said the perimeter of the facility had remained secure while staff at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre worked to resolve an incident involving six offenders.

The most serious was at Parkville in November when teens destroyed about half of the facility, forcing the government to find alternative accommodation.

Opposition families and children spokeswoman Georgie Crozier said the latest was the 30th major violent disturbance in the last two years.

“It is clear to all that Minister Jenny Mikakos is hopelessly out of her depth and just lurching from one crisis to another.

“Victoria’s youth justice crisis is now completely out of control and Daniel Andrews has no idea how to fix it.”
