Motorcyclists will be able to ride along bus lanes on major thoroughfares in a new road safety trial.
The initiative, which is currently being tested on Hoddle St, is set to be expanded to the Eastern Freeway inbound from Chandler Highway to Hoddle St, and on Victoria Parade between Hoddle St and Brunswick St.
It comes as the state government unveiled a $1 million safety reforms package, including a star rating system for motorcycle protective clothing and learner rider packs with high-visibility vests and other safety gear.

VicRoads surveillance officers will also receive training to better identify hazards for motorcyclists.
Thirteen motorcyclists have already died on the state’s roads this year.
“We can’t accept road trauma as the price you pay for using the roads — that’s why we’re investing heavily in motorcycle safety to protect some of our most vulnerable road users,” road safety minister Jaala Pulford said.
