What happens in a criminal trial?

A MAN who bashed his brother-in-law has had his sentence doubled.

The Director of Public Prosecutions had appealed against the two years and four month sentence imposed on Louis L’Eveille for an attack which left the victim with life-threatening injuries.

MORE LAW AND ORDER

L’Eveille admitted punching the victim to the side of the head, causing him to fall and hit his head against a concrete floor.

The attack only ended when L’Eveille’s sister intervened.

The brother-in-law was left with traumatic brain injury and a fractured skull.

L’Eveille’s attack had been generated by delusions from alcohol and synthetic cannabis abuse, which led him to think his brother-in-law was having an affair with his former wife.

The court found that L’Eveille had previously been violent while under the influence of synthetic cannabis.

He pleaded guilty to intentionally causing serious injury.

The Court of Appeal found the original sentence was manifestly inadequate.

It sentenced L’Eveille to a six-year maximum jail term with a non-parole period of four years.
