A shaken dad fears his son was inches from possible death after being struck by a bullet following a foiled home invasion attempt.
Nik Jovanovic told the Herald Sun his son, 21, was grazed in the cheek by a flying bullet as he stood in the doorway of their Taylors Lakes home.
Moments earlier, three hooded offenders tried to kick in the door of their Robertsons Rd home and steal keys to the victim’s green Volkswagen Gulf around 11.50pm.
His wife and daughter frantically dialed triple-0 as the violent confrontation unfolded.
Mr Jovanovic said he initially found the trio at the side of his property.
When asked what they were doing, Mr Jovanovic said they claimed they were “looking for our cat”.
However, he suspects they were attempting to disconnect power to the home.
The trio then began to kick in the door “five or six times” without success.
“They basically couldn’t get in and started to leave,” he said.
Mr Jovanovic and his son walked out the front door to get details of the getaway car but were met with gunfire.
He said his son, 21, was struck in the cheek by a bullet.
“It’s a bit hard to take in. I keep thinking why are we the lucky ones. We have no idea,” he said.
“I am shocked this has happened to us.
“(The bullet) could have ended up anywhere … it could have got his eye. You just don’t know.”
His son was rushed to hospital for treatment but has returned home.
Mr Jovanovic described the offenders Caucasian and possibly being aged in their 20s wearing black hoods.
Six people – including the victim’s boyfriend and grandmother – were in the home at the time.
All others were uninjured.
It comes as a woman was slashed with a knife in a second home invasion overnight.
She was confronted by two men inside her home in Wandana Heights, near Geelong, at 2am.
Police say she grabbed one of the thugs as they tried to make off with her bag and car keys.
The 31-year-old was slashed in the shoulder and hand.
