A man shot in the face while driving in Melton walked into a nearby service station bleeding heavily, witnesses say.
The man was driving on the Melton Highway with a woman when someone opened fire on his car about 12.40am.
The man was able to pull into a nearby Caltex service station and call 000.

He suffered injuries to his face and will require surgery in hospital.
Police are now hunting a gunman responsible and mystery surrounds why the shooting took place.
Detectives this morning examined a red hatchback that the pair were driving in.
Workers from the service station said the man, bleeding heavily, went into the bathroom to clean himself up before being taken to hospital.
Police have since towed the car involved and remain at the service station, interviewing potential witnesses and collecting CCTV footage.
They are yet to establish the exact circumstances of the incident and the investigation is ongoing.
Police spokeswoman Natalie Butler said the man sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne hospital.
