SEXUAL ASSAULT CLAIMS ROCK SOVEREIGN HILL

A man was left for dead on tram tracks while cowardly offenders fled following a vicious brawl on Chapel St this morning.

Up to 20 people brawled in Chapel St between High St and Malvern Rd just after 1am this morning, with three men taken to hospital.

One man, 30, suffered serious head and facial injuries and was found lying unconscious on tram tracks.

“He was there for about 30 minutes before police found him,” Detective Acting Sergeant Katie Johnston said.

“He will remain in hospital for some time so doctors can monitor his condition.”

The man was found outside a strip of shops including the Revolver nightclub.

Revolver was not open at the time.

Police said the altercation spilt out onto busy Chapel St and oncoming traffic.

“It’s a very serious incident we’re investigating,” she said.

“It’s extremely vicious and it’s unfortunate you get particular males who decide to go out and spoil it for the rest of us.”

It’s understood the group of males were punching and kicking one another.

Police are investigating whether the brawl involved various groups.

Two other men, both aged 29, were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
