A GRIEVING family is desperate for answers, as the hunt continues for a killer who gunned down a young man in a suburban Melbourne street.

Anwar Teriaki — who the Herald Sun understands was known to some criminal members of the Tiba family — was found bleeding outside a Roxburgh Park property, around the corner from his parent’s home, after gun fire broke the midnight silence in sleepy Coronet Ave on Tuesday.

Distraught family were on Wednesday night being comforted by supporters as detectives questioned Mr Teriaki’s associates in a bid to find out why the 21-year-old was targeted.

“He was quiet and really humble,” one relative said.

“He was loved by his family, by everyone.

“We need to find who did this.”

A friend added that Mr Teriaki was family-oriented and not known to be a big troublemaker.

“That’s why this is such a shock,” they said.

Others took to social media on Wednesday night to offer prayers for the “good guy”.

Emotions ran high in the street on Wednesday as dozens of Mr Teriaki’s friends gathered in disbelief to inspect the roadside and front garden where he lay wounded in his final moments.

Some defied police orders to march through the taped-off crime scene in a bid to get closer to Mr Teriaki’s body.

Car loads of young men unknown to close family members were seen driving slowly past the crime scene, raising suspicion among mourners who were on high alert for strange activity.

Police say a number of men were on the street before the shooting.

Who pulled the trigger on the weapon which fatally injured Mr Teriaki remained unclear but it’s understood police were aware of the names of a number of men with whom the victim — who was known to police — had been associating just prior to the shooting.

Victoria Police said the Homicide Squad believed a group of men had been in Coronet Ave before a number of shots were fired about 12.35am.

Residents said they heard “five or six” loud “bangs” and a car drive from the street.

Saad Lebdeh said the crime was “disconcerting” for local families.

“It’s quite unsettling to think you’ve got that sort of violence happening in the street,” Mr Lebdeh said.

His son Julian said he heard gun shots followed by a scream.

“I heard a brief scream and then silence ... it sounded like a woman,” he said.

“It’s not something you really expect when you’re tucking in to go to bed ... you’re looking over both shoulders now.”

Forensics police and SES crews combed the road and garden beds for evidence along a stretch of about 300m between Mr Teriaki’s home and the scene of his death, while detectives spoke to a number of people including Mr Teriaki’s friends and relatives.
