A MAN has been gunned down in an early morning shooting near a children’s playground in Melbourne’s inner-west.
Blood stains in the gutter of Hope St in Brunswick mark the spot where the victim was found slumped with wounds to his upper body and legs.
Neighbours said they heard a gunshot ring out before police and ambulances swarmed the street about 3am.
Armed Crime squad investigators have been probing the scene as the search continues for the gunman.
Police are considering the theory that the perpetrator took off in a car.
Residents said they were unsettled by the violence.
“My father just heard a bang,” one neighbour said.
“We heard somebody mumbling outside then the police came knocking at the door.
“We only realised someone got shot when all the cop cars came.”
Hope St, which stretches for about 2km, is a residential street and a busy thoroughfare between Pearson St and Sydney Rd.
The man, 29 from Epping, was found in a gutter opposite Alex G Gillon oval and the children’s playground.
He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
