Kensington man Jason Ashman, 48, spent Christmas behind bars, charged with one count of murder.

He faced the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court briefly, and was remanded in custody ahead of another hearing on Thursday.

Investigators believe Mr Wright was shot after a verbal altercation, but are yet to reveal what they believe the fight was about.

Police were called to the property and discovered the man’s body about 11.20pm.

The Wright family released a teary video tribute following the death, saying they wanted justice.

Speaking from South Australia, John Wright said he had only just begun getting to know his grandson.

“To take my grandson from me is one of the worst things you can do to a grandfather,” he said.

“To take another person’s life, for me, is inexcusable.”

Dwayne Wright’s aunty Laura Wright said she wanted those responsible to pay.

“I hope the person … pays for their crime and pays for what they’ve done,” she said.

“The people that did this sort of stuff just need to understand … you can’t take another person’s life.”

Mr Ashman was arrested by the homicide squad on Monday afternoon.

Detectives interviewed another man and a woman who are believed to have been present moments before the shooting happened at the Civic Parade home.

The court heard on Tuesday Mr Ashman suffered from ADHD, depression and anxiety. His lawyer also told the court he had a back injury and a hernia.

Magistrate Franz Holzer said the accused should undergo an urgent medical review.
