Man drowns at Woolamai Beach, Phillip Island

A MAN has drowned at Woolamai Beach on Phillip Island, the second fatality on the wild stretch in the past week.

A MAN has drowned in the second fatality at a rugged Phillip Island beach in the past week.

A man was seen just before 5pm at Woolamai Beach but attempts to rescue him were unsuccessful.

He was found dead about 20 minutes later.

The man has not been formally identified.

Indian student Hemant Govekar disappeared at Woolamai while having a Christmas Day swim.

Human remains were found a day later.

Woolamai is a wild stretch of beach, exposed to large swells and punctuated by fast-flowing rips.
