Man dies in hospital after Lara shooting

A man has died after being shot in the face near Geelong, with police scouring the crime scene and seizing jetskis from the home.

A man who was suffered critical injuries after he was shot in Lara has died in hospital.

It’s understood the 34-year-old man was shot in the face around 6pm on Wednesday night.

He was flown to The Alfred hospital for treatment but died this afternoon.

Uniformed police and detectives were scouring the Bacchus Marsh Rd property where the incident occurred for several hours today.

Detectives seized jetskis and could be seen leaving the property with evidence bags.

The white weatherboard and brick home, set back off the busy highway, was guarded by two police officers throughout the day.

A severely damaged dark-coloured hatchback, propped up by bricks, could be seen just outside the property boundary.

It was surrounded by police tape.

Police spokeswoman Leading Senior Constable Natalie Dean said two women, both aged 29 from Lara and Newtown, were assisting police with their inquiries and have since been released.

A 35-year-old man from Bell Park was arrested at the scene for unrelated matters at the scene.

He has also been released without charge.

It’s understood officers spent several hours speaking to neighbours on Wednesday night to try and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Sen-Constable Dean said homicide squad detectives would now take charge of the investigation and would be assisted by regional police and members of the Armed Crime Squad.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting are still to be determined and the investigation is ongoing,” Sen-Constable Dean said.
