The avid Aussie rules player in the Essendon District Football League did not apply for bail.

The court heard it was his first time in custody.

His appearance in custody came hours after he turned himself in to police.

He handed himself in after footage was made public in police’s manhunt to find the woman’s alleged attacker.

Mr Williams was charged with intent to commit a sexual act, unlawful imprisonment, recklessly cause injury and other assault related charges.

Leading Senior Constable Lea-Taylor Bolton said investigators believe he grabbed the woman as she walked along Little Lonsdale St about 6.30am on Sunday, and attempted to drag her towards Brights Place.

The 39-year-old victim managed to fight her attacker off, and he was last seen running towards Lonsdale St.

Paramedics assessed the woman at the scene.

She did not need to be taken to hospital.

Mr Williams was remanded in custody to return to court on January 18.
