A STREET-racing motorcyclist who fled the scene where his mate was flung off a Bolte Bride ramp and killed would have known the crash had occurred, police say.
The riders were travelling alongside at high speed on the Bolte Bridge about 10pm last night, before a 32-year-old Highett man lost control of his bike at a bend near the Burnley Tunnel exit and crashed into a side barrier.
He was then thrown over the barrier and died at the scene.
Major Collision Investigation Unit Detective Inspector Stuart McGregor said the other rider would have known a crash occurred before fleeing the scene.
“We believe they may have known each other as they were riding alongside,” he said.
“For that rider not to stop just shows what they are capable of. We’re urging him to come forward before we find him, because we will.”
Mr McGregor said police were “shocked this could happen”.
“It was pretty nasty and completely avoidable,” he said. “Freeways aren’t designed to be race tracks.”
Police suspect the two motorcyclists were travelling at high speed while racing before the fatal crash.
“They were swerving in between cars,” Mr McGregor said. “Both of them knew what they were doing and could have stopped at any time, but they didn’t.”
The rider who was died was riding a red Honda motorbike and the other rider was on a black motorbike, police say.
Mr McGregor urged anyone with dashcam footage, or who may have witnessed the crash to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
