A youth justice staffer has been taken to hospital after he was injured while attempting to restrain two brawling young offenders at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre.

It is understood the man was knocked unconscious during the disturbance yesterday but continued to work and then later collapsed.

A prison insider told the Herald Sun the officer was attempting to restrain two brawling offenders when he was struck.

It’s understood the officer suffered significant bruising but avoided major injury.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the man, aged in his 30s, suffered injuries to his upper body and was flown to a hospital in Melbourne.

The incident has angered the Department of Justice, with a spokeswoman labelling violence committed by those in custody as “absolutely unacceptable”.

Young offenders were also reminded that new laws were in effect that strengthen consequences for those who assault staff, including serving sentences on top of existing detention periods.

A Department of Justice and Regulation spokeswoman said yesterday a staff member “was injured in an incident at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre this afternoon”.

“Violent behaviour or assaults by young people in custody is absolutely unacceptable, and the safety of our staff, young people and the community is of utmost importance,” she said.

“Alleged criminal behaviour in youth justice facilities — including assaults and other forms of violence — is reported to Victoria Police.”

Victoria Police has been contacted for comment.
