A number of punches were thrown at a male prison officer at the embattled Malmsbury Youth Detention Centre last night.

It is understood the staffer narrowly avoided being coward punched around 7.30pm, when the prisoner refused to go into his room at lockdown.

The incident happened in the high security Ulbara unit.

Unhappy staff are today meeting with management, hoping to have the prisoner moved to another facility.

Ambulance Victoria was not called.

It comes as staff over the weekend refused to return to work following a spate of violent attacks by inmates.
