The husband of a seamstress brutally raped and killed in her Melbourne home almost 32 years ago has denied any involvement as a family friend stands trial over her murder.

Kuy Hieang Thong, now 71, was grilled about his wife’s killing as he gave evidence over three days in the Supreme Court trial of Meth Mean, who is charged with her murder.

Ranny Yun, 27, was in the sewing room of her Springvale home when she was allegedly whacked to the head with a wooden block, before having her throat slit during a sexual assault on October 15, 1987.

MORE LAW AND ORDER

Her murder went unsolved for more than three decades, until police allegedly made a DNA breakthrough and arrested Mr Mean in Western Australia in November 2017.

Mr Mean has pleaded not guilty. His barrister, Anthony Lewis, has blamed Mr Thong.

Asked by Mr Lewis if he sexually assaulted Ms Yun at their home that day, Mr Thong said: “No, she’s my wife.”

Mr Lewis told the 13-person jury Mr Thong years later confessed to a friend, who is expected to give evidence, that he organised a hitman to get rid of his wife so he could be with his mistress.

The trial, before Justice Jane Dixon, continues.
