Mother of tragic toddler Jaidyn Gomes speaks

The mother of a toddler allegedly murdered in his Langwarrin home has spoken about her relationship with the man she trusted to look after her children.

Stacie Saggers is coming to terms with the loss of her two-year-old son, Jaidyn Gomes-Sebastiao, who was pronounced dead in their Potts Rd home this month.

Brendan Pallant, 32, has been charged with Jaidyn’s murder and will next appear in court on January 22.

Ms Saggers, 34, said she met Mr Pallant through a mutual friend. Days after the pair began a relationship, Mr Pallant had moved in with her.

“He pretty much straight away (moved in) … he started rearranging the furniture to make it better,” she said.

Ms Saggers said she trusted Mr Pallant with her two children despite having known him for only around a month when the tragedy unfolded.

“It wasn’t the first occasion he looked after the kids,” she said. “He was really good with them. He treated me like a princess, he acted like a true gentleman.”

Ms Saggers arrived home from work on September 2, saying it was a “terrible day to remember”.

“A day that will never be forgotten and something I have to live with for the rest of my life,” she said. “Discovering that my two-year-old baby boy had been tragically taken tore me apart.

“What did he ever do wrong? All he wanted was to be loved and he was loved unconditionally by me.”

Ms Saggers has not spoken to Mr Pallant since they were separately taken away in police custody the day of Jaidyn’s death.

“Detectives have told me I am not able to speak to him,” she said.

Ms Saggers was kept in police custody for more than 24 hours and said it was “not a nice feeling at all”.

“All I can say is to be locked in the watch-house is something.

“I wasn’t treated very nice. I asked for a blanket, I asked for a drink, I got told by staff they’re not a hotel.” She was released without charge.

Ms Saggers has not been able to live in her home since the alleged murder.

“It can be very hard for me to be there,” she said.

“I have been left broken-hearted.”

Jaidyn was farewelled at a funeral on September 21.

Ms Saggers has since placed her son’s items into storage: “I can’t let it go yet, I don’t think I ever will.”

She is living with family but hopes to undergo a drug rehabilitation program to help get her life back on track.

“I’ll do anything, private rehab off my own back.

“Rehab is me wanting to completely turn my life around now that something terrible has happened.”

Since the incident her cleaning business has suffered and clients have not wanted to engage her services due to her perceived involvement in her son’s alleged murder. “I’ve been through the works,” Ms Saggers said.

“I made some poor parenting choices.

“I’ve had a drug addiction for many years and it takes a lot for someone to admit that.

“I’ve been attacked by the public and been told I didn’t care about Jaidyn.”

Ms Saggers said the “heartache will never go away” over the loss of her baby boy.
