A GUN discarded beside the Great Ocean Road was used by a harebrained hit team in a botched bikie murder plot.

On Thursday, homicide squad detectives conducted a controlled burn of a small area of grass at Spout Creek where the weapon was found.

They believe there may be more evidence in the area linked to the mistaken identity killing of Muhamed Yucel in Keysborough.

The recovered gun has been forensically connected to the killing of Mr Yucel, a hardworking young man who was playing computer games with mates in a garage when gunmen opened fire on the night of May 2 last year.

The 22-year-old was struck in the chest and died at the scene.

Two other Keysborough men, aged 23 and 22, received single gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital.

Police have revealed they were treating his death as a case of mistaken identity and that the shooting had links to Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs.

They are suspected of being Comanchero-commissioned shooters assigned to murder a member of the rival Mongols outfit, Farshad Rasooli.

A grey Toyota Corolla seen at the Spout Creek scene at the time of the shooting is thought to be linked to the gun.

A Jeep Cherokee has already been seized from Cranbourne as part of the inquiry.

Forest Fire Management Victoria staff conducted the burn near Lorne today as detectives watched. Police will search the scorched area when it cools off.

“Investigators are currently in a possession of a firearm that has now been forensically linked to the shooting and today’s burn is a search for further evidence in relation to that,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

“They also have information that a grey Toyota Corolla may have travelled to the area around the time of the shooting and would like to hear from anyone who saw this vehicle in the area at the time.”

It was the first of two bungled contract killings linked to the Comanchero last year.

In August, Zabi Ezedyar was executed as he visited the Narre Warren home of Mongol-linked criminal Mohammad “Afghan Ali” Keshtiar.

The cases came amid a spate of Comanchero-related shootings. In February, former gang member Robert Ale survived a hail of bullets at a Hampton Park tattoo parlour that was linked to jailed Comanchero boss Mick Murray.

There was another attempted murder in Reservoir in August last year believed to be the gang’s handiwork.
