But the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court was told today that when interviewed by police after the killing, Mr Vu said it was all a tragic accident.
He’d become aware of the relationship and, armed with a knife, confronted Mr Nguyen and his de facto, Laura Chan.
Several other people were at the Sunshine West home when the confrontation took place on August 5 last year, with some trying to calm Mr Vu, the court heard.
One allegedly tried to restrain Mr Vu before Mr Nguyen was fatally stabbed.
Ms Chan also suffered injuries during the confrontation.
Lawyers for Mr Vu sought to force his sons, who were at the home when Mr Vu was killed, to be cross-examined at a committal hearing in March.
But Magistrate Sarah Dawes refused the application, saying they had already made sworn statements and cross-examination would be of little assistance.

Mr Vu has been remanded in custody since his arrest two days after the killing.
He appeared in court via video link from prison today and made no application for bail.
At the time of the killing, neighbours told the Herald Sun Ms Chan, who had two teenage children, hadn’t been seen at the home for about a fortnight.
