Homicide cops push for breakthrough in Eildon death probe

MYSTERY still surrounds the death of father who last month fell and banged his head after a pub brawl in Eildon, with Homicide Squad detectives now issuing a fresh appeal for witnesses to come forward in hopes of cracking the case.

HOMICIDE Squad detectives have issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward after a father died following a brawl outside a pub in country Victoria last month.

Frankston man Greg Mitchem, 51, died after a fight broke out between a group of men outside a licensed premises at Eildon just before midnight on October 20.

Three men, two aged 18 and one 23, from nearby Thornton were arrested and then released without charge following the fight on Goulburn Valley Highway.

Mr Mitchem died after he fell and banged his head.

“Detectives have spoken to a number of witnesses to the altercation ... however they believe there are a number of persons who were present that are yet to speak to police,” Victoria Police spokesman Senior Constable Alistair Parsons said.

“Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident who has not yet spoken to police to contact Crime Stoppers.”

Following the brawl devastated friends described Mr Mitchem as a “great bloke” and father who did not deserve to die.

His sudden death came as a huge shock to his family.

Mr Mitchem’s son, Harley, later posted a tribute on Facebook, including a picture of the pair together.

“Words can’t explain the type of Dad you were, true legend. You’re going to be missed Dad I love you,” he wrote.

Mr Mitchem was a life member at Karingal junior football club.

Detectives were told a group of people were seen fighting outside the Goulburn Valley Highway pub just before midnight.

A number of witnesses spoke with police about the incident.

Investigators swarmed the pub the following morning to look for evidence.

Items of clothing, including a jumper and hat were seen lying outside the venue, as police set up a tent.

Country rock band Ruckus were performing at the venue on the night.
