A FEMALE guard has been knocked unconscious after being bashed at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre last night.

It’s been reported a young inmate hit the woman with a guitar during the violent outburst.

Paramedics were called about 8pm to treat the woman.

Corrections Minister Gayle Tierney said the violence was “appalling”.

“This is a situation that I find absolutely appalling under no circumstances does this government accept this behaviour is appropriate in any way, in any facility in their state,” Ms Tierney said.

The government department which oversees youth justice facilities would say only that there was an “incident” and that a staff member was being treated.

“There was an incident at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct on Wednesday that was resolved quickly by Youth Justice staff,” Department of Justice and Regulation spokeswoman Kim Armstrong said.

“A staff member is receiving medical treatment.

“Police will now investigate the matter.”

Ambulance Victoria confirmed one person was taken to hospital.

The office for the Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos also deferred media calls back to the Department.

Police Minister Lisa Neville said she had not been briefed on the attack but said the government wanted to send a strong message to offenders.

“We do have violent offenders in our youth justice system,” Ms Neville said.

“One of the things we have made some changes to, in terms of youth justice, is tougher sentencing, particularly for violent offenders ... who can be subject in future to adult court and adult jail.”

Opposition spokeswoman Georgie Crozier said the attack on the guard was “disgraceful”.

“It’s no wonder Victorians are living in fear when these violent young offenders are bashing women in jail on multiple occasions,” Ms Crozier said.
