Lawyer X: The gangland lawyer that shaped Melbourne's underworld

Former Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Sir Ken Jones is ready to give evidence to the Lawyer X royal commission, the Herald Sun understands.

Sir Ken served two years as Victoria Police deputy commissioner between July 2009 and May 2011.

Supporters of Sir Ken say he believes that the Lawyer X matter cannot be isolated from the many and various scandals that dogged the Victorian justice system for most of the 2000s.

INDUSTRIAL level corrupt and grotesque distortions of the Victorian criminal justice system over many years where judges, juries, defence lawyers and ultimately the Victorian public were cruelly deceived.

ILLEGAL bugging of certain Victorian correction facilities going back to the 1990s.

SYSTEMIC failings and a cover up involving how Victoria Police and the Justice and Corrections departments handled and housed Carl Williams — then the most important witness in Victoria’s history and who had much information to give on corruption and many unsolved homicides — and his subsequent wholly avoidable and convenient murder.

A CRIMINAL conspiracy to obstruct Sir Ken’s investigation into the 2010 murder of Carl Williams involving senior Justice Department and Corrections staff.

HOW the murder investigation into the deaths of Terence Hodson and his wife Christine was initially hobbled and the efforts made to thwart Sir Ken’s later attempts to re investigate these terrible crimes.

Murdered couple Terence and Christine Hodson.

CRIMINAL negligence in the management of Victoria Police and Parole Board IT systems which allowed the unregulated release of dangerous parolees who went on to commit many serious crimes, including several avoidable murders.

THE now scrapped OPI abusing its powers by getting illegal telephone intercept warrants on behalf of themselves and Victoria Police.

AN unhealthy relationship that had developed between the top people in the OPI and Victoria Police so that the OPI’s crucial role as a regulator of the Victoria Police was subverted.

COVER UPS by Victoria Police and Victorian Government public servants of budget stuff-ups, including millions wasted on IT bungles.

It is believed Sir Ken first discovered the Lawyer X corruption when he was investigating the homicide of Carl Williams.

Drug boss and murderer Carl Williams is led from Melbourne’s Supreme Court after one of his court appearances. He was later murdered in jail.

Insiders say he was clearly shocked and angry about the way the Victorian justice system had been so systematically corrupted over many years.

The Herald Sun also understands that Sir Ken reported his concerns — about Lawyer X and many other serious matters — to the relevant authorities in 2010 and was the first to do so.

For properly coming forward, as reported by the Herald Sun at the time, Sir Ken was sent to Coventry, subjected to unproven serious complaints, received death threats and was then effectively “run out of town” in mid-2011 over fears for his and his family’s safety

One evening Sir Ken and his wife reported that gun sight red laser dots were trained on their chests while walking near their Melbourne home one night.

Mrs Jones was made seriously ill by the resulting stress.
