Five arrested in Melbourne CBD brazen daylight brawl

A group of men, including one allegedly armed with a hammer, were swooped on by police after a brawl in Batman Park left one man in hospital.

Critical incident response police have swooped on a brazen daylight brawl in Melbourne CBD that left a man in hospital.

Two men were allegedly approached and threatened by a group of males, one armed with a hammer, in Batman Park about 1.20pm Sunday.

One of the male victims was injured in the ensuing brawl, and the gang fled on foot before being apprehended by police from the Critical Incident Response and Public Order Response teams on Spencer St about 10 minutes later.

The five men arrested were a 19-year-old from Kealba, a 19-year-old from Taylors Hill, a 21-year-old from Taylors Lakes, one 18-year-old and a 20-year old.

Herald Sun photographer Sarah Matray was driving down Spencer St about 2pm on Sunday when she witnessed the group of men being arrested.

“I saw five people sitting on the footpath surrounded by police officers, on Spencer St between Flinders St and Flinders Lane,” Ms Matray said.

”One by one they were put into proper handcuffs and taken away individually in a divvy van over the course of about half an hour.

“They were a bit aggressive, and certainly weren’t happy.

She said the police had emptied the men’s pockets, and placed their personal items into brown paper bags.

“There were five people, four of whom were African in appearance,” she said.

One of the male victims has been taken to hospital with minor injuries, while a Victoria Police spokesman said that the other victim was arrested on an “unrelated matter”.

“All five males are currently in custody, assisting police with their inquiries,” the spokesman said.

No charges have been laid at this stage.
