Figures linked to the deadly Love Machine nightclub drive-by shooting are believed to remain at large, two weeks after a series of arrests.
Police are yet to lay charges over the torching of a Suzuki Swift days after the April 14 double homicide, a key element of the inquiry.
It may be that those who incinerated the car were not involved in the shooting, but were sent to destroy evidence for those directly responsible.
A Suzuki Swift was seen travelling in convoy with a Porsche SUV on the night of the club gun attack.
The fatal shots are believed to have been fired from the Porsche, which was later found burnt-out north of Melbourne.
A Suzuki parked in Simmonds St, South Yarra, was torched three days later.
But those responsible are believed to have destroyed the wrong Suzuki, leaving the one used by the hit team intact and potentially containing vital forensic evidence.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Webster confirmed no one had been charged over the burnt-out car and the investigation was ongoing.
“Detectives previously appealed for information in relation to the arson of a silver Suzuki Swift on Simmonds St, South Yarra,” she said.
“No one has been charged in relation to this fire.”
Investigators are still looking for a Holden Colorado which two men climbed out of shortly before the Suzuki went up in flames.
Three men have so far been charged over the shootings as homicide squad detectives continue their inquiry.
One of them, Jacob Elliott, 18, has been charged with two counts of murder over the deaths of security guard Aaron Osmani and nightclub patron Richard Arow.
Mr Elliott is the son of Melbourne man Nabil Maghnie, who also has come under scrutiny over the shootings.

A day after police revealed the wrong Suzuki may have been torched, police arrested Mr Maghnie over a car accident which happened in May.
Police will allege he was travelling at up to 200kmh in a Range Rover at Woodstock in Melbourne’s north when he hit a roundabout and struck another car.
Allen Fares, 22, has also been charged with two counts of murder over the Love Machine incident.
