Eurydice Dixon’s killer wants to appeal his life sentence, a court has heard.

Jaymes Todd, 20, was jailed for at least 35 years for the brutal rape and murder of the Melbourne comedian in June last year.

Todd’s barrister Tim Marsh has told a Supreme Court hearing where he is defending another killer rapist, Codey Herrmann, that Todd has filed an appeal.

Drawing comparisons between the two cases, and what Todd was sentenced to, Mr Marsh said: “An application for leave to appeal against (Todd’s) decision has been filed.”

The Supreme Court confirmed Todd filed an application for leave to appeal against sentence on Monday.

The grounds for his appeal are unknown.

But Mr Marsh, Victoria Legal Aid’s chief counsel, will not be representing Todd at appeal.

The Herald Sun understands Legal Aid refused to fund it.

But private practitioner James Dowsley has taken on the case pro bono.

Justice Stephen Kaye, in sentencing Todd to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 35 years, said he had to protect the community.

Todd stalked Ms Dixon, 22, for almost an hour as she walked through Melbourne’s CBD towards her home in Princes Hill on June 12 last year.

As she walked through a soccer pitch in Princes Park, Todd struck, raping and strangling her.

Justice Kaye said Todd’s disturbed and despicable sexual fantasy which motivated his offending was the “darkest form of human thinking”.

Ms Dixon’s father Jeremy last month made a compassionate statement after Todd’s sentencing on September 2, wishing his daughter’s killer “to get better”.

“What I’d wish for Jaymes Todd, and what I believe Eurydice would have wished, is that he gets better, and realises what he’s done,” Mr Dixon said.

“I extend my sincere sympathy for those who love him.”

A date has not been set for the Court of Appeal hearing.
