Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer, in charge of Victoria Police’s Road Policing Command, said four Highway Patrol officers carried out a two hour operation in Carlton and were surprised at the number of people caught using their phones.
“We had punters watching pornos, people watching movies, we had one guy who had a movie going and another phone going so he could talk to his friends, we had people on social media and most of them had phones in their lap,” he said.
“It shows to me there is a broad complacency about what people are doing in their cars.”
Mr Fryer today said there had been seven people killed on Victoria’s roads in as many days.
The fatal collisions included a 19-year-old woman who was killed when her crashed into a tree in Fumina South, a woman who died when she was hit by a truck in Footscray and cyclist Yuka Kamada who lost her life when she was struck by a garbage truck in Brighton.
Mr Fryer urged drivers to take care on the roads ahead of the weekend.
“Of course people don’t expect these tragedies to occur, but I think maybe this is half the issue, all road users including pedestrians and cyclists need to consider it could happen to them,” he said.
“Three drivers, two pedestrians, one motorcycle rider and one cyclist, four of which are our vulnerable road users, are now no longer with us.
“In two of these incidents police are investigating whether speed and or impairment was a factor, and in the case of the motorcycle crash we believe the bike was stolen.
“With the holidays upon us many people are out and about, everyone is moving around sometimes with a different mindset — with always something else to do.”
The 2017 road toll is currently 128 lives lost, compared to 147 this time last year.
