Finks bikie shooting in Frankston

Exclusive: Dramatic CCTV footage of the moment gunmen opened fire on the home of a feared Finks bikie boss after setting fire to his car can be revealed.

Detectives from the anti-bikie Echo Taskforce released the footage to the Herald Sun as they continued to investigate the attack on Brent James Reker’s home on May 31 last year.

Reker was inside the rented Frankston house with his wife and two-week-old son when it was sprayed with bullets about 5am.

The CCTV footage shows a man running from a car parked outside the Warrain St property before it bursts into flames. He jumps into the driver’s seat of the getaway car while another man fires a number of shots at the property with a high-powered gun before he gets in the back of the vehicle, which speeds away.

One of the bullets hit a neighbouring property where a family — including two children aged under four — were asleep.

Detectives believe the getaway vehicle in the footage was previously seen in the Melton area, more than 90km away.

Investigators are cross checking the ballistic matches from the shots fired at the scene with firearms since been seized by police.

“We’re really keen to speak to anyone who might have seen the offenders’ vehicle in the northwest suburbs, particularly the Melton area,” Detective Sergeant Justin Mercovich said.

“While we believe this shooting is highly targeted, what is concerning is the opportunity for innocent parties to be caught up in incidents such as this.

“One of the bullets has struck a neighbouring property where two small children were asleep, so the consequences could really have been disastrous.”

Reker has recently been working to re-establish the Finks outlaw motorcycle gang in Victoria.

Police launched a series of raids in 2015 that shattered the Finks’ membership in Victoria after a national “patch-over” had already significantly weakened them.

But the gang emerged again last year with Reker at the helm.

“Echo Taskforce detectives have undertaken an extensive investigation into this incident with a number of people having already been spoken to by police and several other lines of inquiry have been looked into,” Sgt Mercovich said.

“There are definitely people out there who know why this happened and who is responsible, so we want those people to speak to us.”

Police are keen to speak to anyone who recognises the men or vehicle or has any other knowledge about the incident.
