A DESPERATE refugee who set himself alight in a Springvale bank after his dole payment was stopped has appeared in court for a brief hearing.

Myanmar asylum seeker Nur Islam, 22, is accused of injuring 26 people after setting himself on fire in the Springvale Commonwealth Bank in November last year.

Magistrate Donna Bakos heard today the defence and prosecution were close to reaching an agreement and the “matter would resolve”.

He is facing 92 charges over the incident.

The matter was adjourned for three weeks.

Last year, the Herald Sun reported Mr Islam became increasingly erratic after he was asked to attend Centrelink to discuss his payment but left because the line was too long.

Mr Islam arrived in Australia in 2013 and was granted asylum as a member of the persecuted Myanmar Rohingya community.
