A GROUP young friends is lucky to be alive after their unit was sprayed with bullets in what police believe to be a targeted attack.
Detectives said the gunman deliberately fired four shot at the Potter Street address in Dandenong about 7am on Saturday morning, while two tenants and their guests were inside.
The group of seven said they slept through the shooting after arriving home in the early hours and police alerted them to the attack.
McQueen Sulaiman, who was sleeping metres from where two bullets shattered a window, told the Sunday Herald Sun he was thankful no one was hurt.
“I was sleeping on the couch right next to the window and heard nothing,” he said.
“Two of the other guys heard four bangs but they thought they were dreaming.
“I don’t think they meant to get anyone but of course we’re worried, we’re lucky no one was hurt.”
Detective Acting Sergeant Kimberley Alp from Dandenong CIU said police became aware of the shooting when neighbours reported shell casings in the driveway to police.
“The shooter or shooters have shot from close proximity, they’ve had to travel 20-30m down the driveway to shoot at the unit,” she told the Sunday Herald Sun.
“We believe the unit was targeted and it wasn’t accidental.
“We’re unaware of how the shooter or shooters arrived ... by vehicle or on foot.”
Investigators have canvassed neighbours and seized forensic evidence from the scene.
Detective Acting Sergeant Alp said the occupants of the unit and their guests weren’t known to police.
“It’s a little surprising, they’re not known to us,” she said.
“(The shooting) wasn’t expected at all, they were surprised, they weren’t even aware of the incident until police attended and woke them.”
The motive of the shooting is currently unknown.
“It can be difficult to establish a motive, with two shots fired into garage, it could’ve been more of a warning than a specific attack on the people themselves,” Ms Alp said.
“Damage to the garage door and to two upper level windows remain at the house.”
Detectives are appealing for anyone who may have been in Potter St around 7am or who may have witnessed anything suspicious in the vicinity to contact Crime Stoppers.
